When does the garbage truck come for pickup in my area?
- The day and time of trash pickup in your area will depend on a number of factors. As a WM customer, you can easily access your pickup schedule and view your truck’s ETA in your My WM account.
When do I put my carts or bins out for weekly curbside pickup?
- Wheel your carts to the street and place them curbside by 6 a.m. on your collection day. Do not overload carts; the lids must close completely. Overage fees may apply to overfilled carts. Make sure that all trash and debris is in the cart. Garbage or waste left beside carts may not be collected.
What items can I put into the trash?
- The following items are included in everyday trash. These items can be placed in your curbside totes, bins, cans or containers.

What size container is right for my business?

- Front-load containers, bins and dumpsters are most often used for non-residential, business or commercial waste collection. You can arrange for one or more 2-,4-, 6- or 8-cubic-yard containers.
- Front-load containers are good for office buildings, manufacturing plants and offices, distribution centers, apartments, multi-family properties and residential buildings, hotels, schools and universities, shopping centers, grocery stores, convenience stores, service stations, auto body shops, nail salons, hair and grooming salons, restaurants, lunch counters, delis, healthcare offices, urgent care locations, hospitals, health testing facilities and strip malls.
What is the difference between a front-load container and a rear-load container?
- Front-load dumpsters and rear-load dumpsters typically have the same capacity for trash and refuse. The key difference is the way the truck picks up and empties the dumpster. With a front-loading dumpster, there are metal slots on both sides of the dumpster where the truck forks insert, and the container is lifted and emptied over the top of the truck cab.
- With rear-load dumpsters, the truck connects directly to the face of the dumpster, usually by way of a cable. This means rear-load dumpsters don’t have slots on the sides, making them ideal for tighter spaces.
What is the difference between a slanted-top bin or a flat-top bin?
- Slanted-top bins are better suited for very cold environments. Melting snow and ice will drain off the slanted tops. Both types of bin have tops made of hard plastic.

How often is business trash picked up?
- Business trash pickup is once per week, with additional days available by request. We make it easy to up-size your container or arrange for additional pickups based on the seasonality and peaks of your business.
Do you offer 24/7 support and paperless billing?
- Waste Management recognizes that our business customers have many different priorities and that their time is valuable. We offer 24/7 online support through the My WM portal and online chat features. We send digital alerts and notifications and offer AutoPay and Paperless Billing. What is a roll-off container or roll-off dumpster?
- Roll-off dumpsters — so named because they have wheels and are unloaded from the back of a roll-off truck — are ideal for manufacturers, large retailers, commercial or residential renovations, construction and demolition firms, land, yard or tree clearing trimming and removal, festivals and large events, and agricultural harvests. Many different sizes of roll-off dumpsters are available from Waste Management. The most-popular sizes are 20-, 30-, and 40-cubic-yards of capacity.
- Roll-off dumpsters and bins can be placed in safe locations. Waste Management trucks will need to be able to access the dumpster in order to remove it. Once emptied, it can be replaced in its original or other designated location. Some types of waste, especially hazardous, are not allowed in roll-off dumpsters and/or require an additional fee. What is a compactor?
- A compactor is an electrically powered machine that reduces the size of waste material by pressing on it with significant force (compaction), thereby greatly reducing space needed for storage. Waste Management compactors are fully enclosed and range in size from 2 cubic yards to 40 cubic yards. The mechanical blade within the container compacts the loaded-in waste materials. Compactors are ideal for businesses that generate large amounts of waste or use significant quantities of recyclable materials.
- Up-front costs for compactors are typically larger than that of roll-off dumpsters. However, over time, compactors yield savings by reducing trash pickup counts or recycling sell-offs. Compactors are often used by hospitals, distribution centers, manufacturing companies, industrial plants and recycling centers. This is a 3 cubic yard heavy-duty bag, able to hold 606 gallons of debris or 3,300 pounds of refuse. The bag is 8′ long x 4′ wide x 2’6″ tall, large enough to hold full sheets of plywood or drywall. How do I prepare items for bulky pickup?
- A: Preparation guidelines for large or bulky item pickup varies by area. The best way to find out if it is available in your area, is to check your address with one of our agents through Live Chat or over the phone during normal business hours. Some general guidelines include:
- Items covered in fabric (mattresses, box springs, sofas, etc.) must be covered in plastic
- Items that hold water (dishwashers, hot water heaters, toilets, etc.) must be drained or the liquid solidified
- Items that contain freon (refrigerators, freezers, etc.) must be removed by a certified individual. Some locations may collect items still containing freon for an additional cost
- Long items (poles, playground equipment, etc.) must be cut into four-foot sections

I sent an email (filled out form, etc.) for a bulky pickup, why have I not heard back?
- A: We do our best to respond to each form within 1-2 business days. If your request was submitted more than 2 business days ago, we suggest reaching out to one of our agents through Live Chat or over the phone during normal business hours. This will ensure that your pickup is scheduled, and you understand the next steps before you disconnect.
Where can I drop off bulky items?
- A: At the very top of WM.com, you will see a tab for “Drop Off Locations” – this can be used to find facilities near you. For more information about acceptable materials and the cost to dispose of them, please contact us at 800- 963.4776.
Why did my bulky pickup not occur?
- A: Occasionally things happen, and our Drivers are not able to make it on the scheduled service day and will arrive the next day. If your items have not been collected within three-days of your scheduled service, please follow up with one of our agents through Live Chat or over the phone during normal business hours. They will be able to provide you with additional information on the status of your pickup and to reschedule if necessary.

How do I dispose of concrete?
- The easiest way to dispose of concrete is by renting a temporary roll-off dumpster. A 40-yard roll-off is recommended for most jobs that produce concrete debris.
- Renting a temporary roll-off from WM is easy. Just check availability in your area, choose your dates of service, select your waste type and book your rental.
How do I dispose of construction waste?
- Renting a roll-off dumpster is the best way to dispose of construction waste — it’s easy, reliable and keeps debris contained until it’s ready for collection. WM offers temporary roll-offs in a range of sizes to suit different types and amounts of waste.
- Renting a roll-off from WM couldn’t be easier. Just check availability in your area, choose your dates of service, select your waste type and book your rental.
How do I dispose of ceramic tile?
- As with most waste generated by construction, demolition and renovation projects, ceramic tile disposal is best handled by a temporary roll-off dumpster rental.
- For smaller jobs like single homes or a standalone office, an 8- or 10-yard dumpster should suffice. For larger jobs, you’ll want to consider a 20-, 30- or even 40-yard dumpster.
- WM offers these sizes and more, with easy rental. Just check availability in your area, choose your dates of service, select your waste type and book your rental.
Where can I drop off construction debris?
- Waste Management has hundreds of drop-off locations across the United States where you can dispose of your construction debris. If hauling your construction debris to one of our landfills isn’t feasible, you can order a temporary roll-off dumpster or one of our Bagster® bags.

For larger scale construction projects, a 40-yard dumpster is typically recommended; however, you can always contact our support team to get the most accurate estimate.

Our mail-order recycling kits come with everything you need, from the box to the return shipping label. Simply enter your address to get a list of all Recycle by Mail services available in your area, select the items you want to recycle and then order the kit online. From there, all you have to do is pack up your bulbs, batteries or electronics and send the kit back.

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs and Tubes: We have mail-in containers that can fit 13 13-watt bulbs, or 7 t-12 or 16 t-8 tubes.

When do I put my carts or bins out for weekly curbside pickup?
- Wheel your carts or trash containers to the street and place them curbside by 6 a.m. on your collection day. Do not overload carts; the lids must close completely. Overage fees may apply to overfilled carts. Make sure that all trash and debris is in the cart. Garbage or waste left beside carts may not be collected.
What items do NOT go into the trash?
- The following hazardous household waste items should NOT be treated as everyday garbage and should NOT be disposed of curbside, in your totes, bins or carts:
- Batteries
- Electronics
- Fluorescent light bulbs
- Paint and paint cans
- Used motor oil and filters
- Prescription medications

Can I schedule a bulky pickup? How do I dispose of a used mattress or old toilet?
- Bulky or bulk-waste pickups are available to certain Waste Management customers. Terms, fees and conditions may apply. Learn more and easily schedule your “bulky” pickup from your myWM account.
- Items considered bulky include:
- Appliances, TVs and electronics
- Household furniture

- Tires – up to 4 car or light-truck tires separated from rims

- Some items are too hazardous for recycling or disposal in a landfill. Search for a drop-off location that accepts these items and plan for drop-off. Fees, terms and conditions may apply.
- Paint, stain, varnish, thinner and adhesives
- Automotive products such as old fuel, anti-freeze, brake fluid, motor oil and oil filters
- Household cleaners with ammonia or bleach
- Aerosol cans
- Fluorescent light bulbs and lamps

- Garden products including pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers
- Propane tanks and fire extinguishers

How can garbage containers, totes or bins be cleaned?
- Household baking soda can work wonders at removing trash container smells. Add ¼ cup baking soda to your trash receptacle at the beginning of each week. The best time to add the baking soda is when the containers are dry and clean. Clean cat litter can also be substituted for baking soda. You can clean your trash container with regular soap and water.

Accepted in Your Bin*
These items can go in your recycling bin, as long as they’re clean and dry.
Plastic Bottles & Containers
Recycle plastics by shape: bottles, jars, jugs and tubs. The “chasing arrows” symbol doesn’t necessarily mean it’s recyclable.
Clean and dry containers, then put the cap back on before tossing in the bin.
Food & Beverage Cans
Recycle empty tin, aluminum and steel cans.
Empty aerosol cans are also recyclable. If the can has a plastic lid, remove it before recycling.
Paper
Paper, newspaper and magazines are good to recycle.
If paper is soiled or wet, compost it.
Flattened Cardboard & Paperboard
Flatten and recycle all cardboard and paperboard.
Cardboard pizza delivery boxes without leftovers or liners should be recycled; but leftover crusts, cheese and other food should not.
Food & Beverage Containers
Rules for recycling milk cartons, juice boxes and food cartons vary by city, county and state. Check local recycling programs for options to recycle cartons.
Make sure containers are completely empty to avoid contamination.
Glass Bottles & Containers
Glass recycling rules vary, please check your local program guidelines.
Check local program guidelines for options to recycle glass. Some communities have curbside pickup or drop-off locations to recycle glass.
Not Accepted in Your Bin
Try to reduce and reuse these items instead of putting them in the trash.
No Bagged Recyclables
Do not bag recyclables. They must be loose in the bin.
If you collect your recyclables in a bag, empty them directly into your cart and reuse the bag!
No Plastic Bags
Plastic bags are not accepted as part of curbside recycling programs – they get tangled in equipment and threaten worker safety.
Do not bag recyclables as materials inside may not get recycled. Reuse plastic bags, or learn where you can recycle them at plasticfilmrecycling.org.
No Plastic Wrap & Film
Plastic wrap, bubble wrap, sandwich bags and freezer bags should not go in the recycle bin.
Reuse whenever possible for presents, moving, or storage of similar items, or look for local options to recycle.
No Flexible Packaging
Flexible packaging like chip bags and juice or soup pouches cannot be recycled in curbside programs.
This type of packaging is made from multiple materials preventing it from being recycled.
No Cups with Wax or Plastic Coatings
Cups with plastic or waxed coatings are not recyclable. The plastic lids should be trashed as well.
Invest in and carry a reusable cup instead.
No Polystyrene Foam & Plastic
Polystyrene foam, plastic “to-go” containers and cups are made of non-recyclable materials, and are not acceptable in the curbside recycling program.
Packing peanuts aren’t recyclable either, however some shipping stores will take peanuts back for reuse.
Other Materials
Typically not accepted for curbside pickup. Check local programs for disposal options.
No Tangling Items
Garden hoses, rope, leashes, wire, holiday lights, string and chains should never go in the recycling bin.
“Tanglers” can wrap around equipment, endanger MRF workers and shut down entire recycling centers. If they are still in good condition, donate them.
No Dirty Diapers
Dirty diapers’ and pet waste’s yuck factor increase when they end up where they shouldn’t — the recycle bin!
These materials will spoil all of the recyclables, turning the load to trash. Trash these instead and keep recyclables clean and dry.
No Household Items
Check local programs for reuse and recycling options first. Put them in the trash bin if no other options are available.
Clothing, textiles, shower curtains, mini-pools, fencing and furniture don’t go in the recycling.
No Medical Waste
Medical waste can pose a safety hazard and never goes in curbside recycling or waste bins.
Needles are especially dangerous so dispose of them in a safe container like our MedWaste Tracker® box, or contact your local provider.
No Garage Waste
Car parts, scrap metal, tires, filters, propane cylinders and the like are safety hazards if put in curbside recycling or trash bins.
Check locally for special collection programs or take them to a local retailer or scrap recycler.

Myth: Most Americans recycle all they can
- Reality: False.
- Research shows convenience and commitment are required for maximum recycling. For instance, do you recycle in several rooms of your home? If you only recycle in the kitchen, recyclables in your home office or bathroom get thrown away. So make recycling a collaborative effort where everyone participates, enabling the most recycling of the right materials.
Myth: Recycling arrows on a container mean it is definitely recyclable
- Reality: Only in some cases. Check the table above and local program guidelines to see what’s recyclable and what’s not.
- Many plastics cannot be made into new products. Recycle plastics by shape: bottles, jars, jugs and tubs.
Myth: Containers must be squeaky clean in order to be recycled
- Reality: Containers should be clean, but don’t have to be spotless.
- While all bottles, cans and containers should be clean, dry and free of most food waste before you place them in your recycling container, they don’t need to be spotless. The goal is to make sure they are clean enough to avoid contaminating other materials, like paper, or your un-lined kitchen recycling bin. Try using a spatula to scrape cans and jars, and putting recyclables in your sink among the dishes you are rinsing to share that same water to rinse and remove residue.
Myth: Even if an item shouldn’t go in the bin, it will get sorted anyway
- Reality: False. Non-recyclable items are not accepted curbside.
- Non-recyclable items contaminate recyclables. Recyclables stuck inside plastic bags are at risk for never making it through the recycling process. Conversely, recyclable items placed into garbage containers are hauled to a landfill and cannot be recovered effectively. The right thing to do is put the right recyclables in the recycling container and non-recyclables into garbage containers. Recyclables with the greatest impact are bottles, cans, paper and cardboard.
Myth: Hoses, tanks, shower curtains, swing sets, etc. are recyclable
- Reality: Just because it’s plastic doesn’t mean it’s recyclable in your recycling program.
- If it’s not bottles, cans, paper or cardboard, it probably doesn’t belong in your curbside mixed recycling bin and may even require special handling. Just because an item is made from plastic, or contains plastic parts, doesn’t mean recycling facilities can handle it. There are other resources (e.g., Earth911.org) that can help answer questions about what to do with non-recyclables or household hazardous waste.
Myth: All types of glass bottles and jars are recyclable
- Reality: The acceptance of glass in recycling programs varies by jurisdiction.
- Glass recycling collection varies in communities across the U.S. Some communities recycle glass with all other recyclables; some collect glass separately at the curb in its own container; and some cities have specific recycling drop-off locations for glass. Some states, like CA, CT, OR, IA, MI, ME, VT, MA and NY, have ‘bottle bill’ laws that allow for a per-bottle deposit when bottles are brought to return centers or retailers for recycling. Please refer to your community’s recycling guidelines for local program information.
Myth: Aerosol cans are acceptable in the recycle bin
- Reality: It varies by jurisdiction.
- Most recycling programs accept empty/dry aerosol cans (without the caps). If the can isn’t empty, it could be dangerous. Some fires are caused in baling machines from trace amounts of can chemicals, and cans with leftover propellant have been known to become projectiles when densified/baled. Waste Management facilities and commodity vendors accept steel, mixed metal and aluminum aerosol packages. Multi-material aerosol packages are not recyclable.

What can I drop off at a landfill?
- In the Drop Off Locations map above, type in your address to find a landfill near you then browse the Accepted Materials tab for that location.
How much does it cost to drop off trash at a landfill?
- The charge to drop off waste depends on the weight of the load. Special materials like mattresses or electronics may incur an additional charge. Depending on the location, some landfills may require a customer agreement before materials can be dropped off.
Where can I drop off construction waste?
- You can drop off construction waste at a landfill or order a temporary roll-off dumpster. Between our large selection of temporary roll-off dumpsters, our signature Bagster® bag, a vast network of drivers and a dedicated team of service representatives, we’ll help you take care of your construction waste and recycling the right way. Can I get rid of old furniture at a Waste Management facility?
- When disposing of old furniture, see if the item is in good enough condition to donate. If not, we can help you find a landfill or recycling facility nearby.
- To find out if your materials are disposable, type your address into the map above and toggle between Recycling or Trash Disposal. Our ability to accept certain materials depends on local regulations and capabilities of the individual facility, but the map will provide you with a list of locations and the materials they accept as well as a phone number to contact us for questions. Commonly accepted materials include:

- A waste transfer station is a temporary holding facility where waste goes to be sorted and then sent to a landfill or recycling facility. This sorting process allows waste disposal and recycling to be handled more efficiently and is an important part of our commitment to environmental stewardship.

James C. Fish, Jr.
President and Chief Executive Officer
James (Jim) Fish, Jr. is President and Chief Executive Officer for WM. He is also a member of the Board of Directors. Jim joined WM in 2001 and was named CEO in November 2016. Prior to becoming CEO, Jim was the Company’s CFO from 2012-2016 and was named President in July 2016. Over the last 20 years, he has held several key positions with the Company, including Senior Vice President for the Company’s Eastern Group, Area Vice President for Pennsylvania and West Virginia, Market Area General Manager for Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Vice President of Price Management and Director of Financial Planning and Analysis. Before joining WM, Fish held finance and revenue management positions at Westex, a Yellow-Roadway subsidiary; Trans World Airlines; and America West Airlines. He began his professional career at KPMG Peat Marwick. Fish earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Arizona State University and an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago. He is also a certified public accountant.
John Morris
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
As Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) for WM, John Morris has responsibility for all field operations, which includes oversight of collections, disposal, recycling and landfills. He is a member of the Company’s senior leadership team and reports to Jim Fish, President and Chief Executive Officer.Morris has held several positions in his 20-plus years with the company including Market Area General Manager of NYC, Area Vice President of Greater Mid-Atlantic Area, Chief Strategy Officer, and most recently Senior Vice President, Field Operations. John is a graduate of Rutgers University.
Devina Rankin
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
As the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for WM, Devina A. Rankin is responsible for all finance functions for the Company. She also has executive responsibility for the internal audit, investor relations, supply chain functions and business development. She is a member of the Company’s senior leadership team and reports to WM President and Chief Executive Officer, Jim Fish. Rankin joined the company in 2002 and has held several corporate finance positions of increasing responsibility including Assistant Treasurer and Treasurer. Prior to joining WM, Rankin was a member of the assurance practices of Ernst & Young and Arthur Andersen. Rankin has a Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Science in Accounting from Texas A&M University and is a certified public accountant licensed in Texas.
Chuck Boettcher
Executive Vice President, Corporate Development & Chief Legal Officer
Charles (Chuck) Boettcher is Executive Vice President, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer of WM. He is responsible for all legal, corporate secretary, ethics and compliance, government affairs, corporate development and innovation as well as oilfield services, security and real estate functions. He is a member of the Company’s senior leadership team and reports to Jim Fish, President and Chief Executive Officer. Boettcher has previously served as the Company’s Vice President and General Counsel. Immediately prior to joining WM, he was Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel of Dallas-based Oilfield Water Logistics, a produced water gathering, transportation and disposal company backed by private equity sponsor Natural Gas Partners. Prior to that, Boettcher served for eight years as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer and Corporate Secretary of Houston-based Eagle Rock Energy Partners. Boettcher received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of South Dakota and a Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law.
Steven R. Batchelor
Senior Vice President, Operations
As Senior Vice President, Operations, Steven (Steve) Batchelor has responsibility for all operations in the western part of North America, including oversight of collection, disposal, recycling and landfills. He is a member of the Company’s senior leadership team, led by Jim Fish, President and Chief Executive Officer. He started at the company in 1997 and has held multiple field and corporate leadership roles including Area Vice President of Minnesota-Iowa Area, Illinois-Missouri Valley Area and most recently the Vice President of Collection and Fleet Operations. Before joining WM, Batchelor held leadership roles at Browning Ferris Industries, Inc. Batchelor has a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from the University of Phoenix.
Rafael Carrasco
Senior Vice President, Operations
As Senior Vice President, Operations, Rafael “Rafa” Carrasco has responsibility for all operations in the eastern part of North America, including oversight of collection, disposal, recycling and landfills. He is a member of the Company’s senior leadership team, led by Jim Fish, President and Chief Executive Officer. Carrasco formerly served as Area Vice President for WM of the Greater Mid Atlantic. He was responsible for all profit and loss aspects of the Company’s operations in Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and the Boroughs of New York City. He led all collection, landfill, transfer and recycling operations and business support functions within this geography. Prior to leading the Greater Mid Atlantic, he served brief stints as Area Vice President of Eastern Canada and Vice President – Special Projects, directing the Company’s Bagster unit. Before joining WM in 2016, Carrasco was an executive for Sims Metal Management for nearly 7 years, serving in several commercial and operational roles, before ultimately taking the reins of Sims’s businesses in Texas and Oklahoma as Regional General Manager. After leaving his native Colombia, Carrasco received a BBA and MBA from the University of Houston, while lettering four years as a Division I basketball athlete.
Tara Hemmer
Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer
As Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer for WM, Tara Hemmer is responsible for growing sustainable service offerings, including recycling, renewable energy and organics. In addition, she oversees all environmental, social impact and governance initiatives. She was previously Senior Vice President, Field Operations for the southern part of North America, including oversight of collection, disposal, recycling and landfills. She is a member of the Company’s senior leadership team, led by Jim Fish, President and Chief Executive Officer. Hemmer joined the company in 1999 and progressed through various leadership roles across North America including Vice President of Disposal Operations, Area Vice President for the Greater Mid-Atlantic Area, and most recently Senior Vice President of Operations, Safety and Environmental Compliance. She also serves on the board of the Environmental Research and Education Foundation. Hemmer graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Nikolaj H. Sjoqvist
Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer
As Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer for WM, Nikolaj H.Sjoqvist is responsible for all digital and technology functions for the Company. This includes eCommerce and online self-service (wm.com), information technology, and advanced analytics and data management. He is amember of the Company’s senior leadership team and reports to WM President and Chief Executive Officer, Jim Fish. Sjoqvist joined the company in 2012 and was previously Vice President of Revenue Management with responsibility for pricing, disciplined growth planning, marketing and advanced revenue analytics. Prior to joining WM, Sjoqvist was a consultant with McKinsey & Company’s marketing and sales practice, and he previously held a number of finance, pricing and technology positions with Hewlett-Packard and Compaq Computer in Europe and North America. Sjoqvist earned a Bachelors in Business Studies from Oxford Brookes University in the UK, and an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
Michael J. Watson
Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer
As Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer (CCO) for WM, Michael J. Watson leads the sales, revenue management, sustainability services and customer experience organizations of the Company. Responsible for the Company’s profitable growth strategy across all sales channels, Watson ensures the delivery of exceptional experiences across the customer’s journey. In addition, he is responsible for the Company’s purpose-driven brand strategy through the marketing, brand and corporate communications organizations. He is a member of the Company’s senior leadership team and reports to WM President and Chief Executive Officer, Jim Fish. Prior to his role as CCO, Watson served as Area Vice President of the Illinois-Missouri Valley Market Area encompassing six states across the Midwest. Watson joined the company in 1992 and progressed through various leadership roles across North America including corporate and field-based positions. Watson received an undergraduate degree in Economics from Indiana University and an MBA with honors from The University of Chicago – Booth School of Business.
