Koreshan State Park
Koreshan State Park is a Florida State Park located in Estero, Florida. The park is named after the Koreshan Unity, a religious group that inhabited the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Koreshan Unity was founded by Cyrus Teed, who believed that the earth was hollow and that humans lived on the inside of it. The group built a community called Koreshtopia, which included a variety of businesses and residential dwellings. The Koreshans were also active in agriculture, and they constructed a irrigation system to water their crops. In 1894, the Koreshans purchased land in Estero, Florida, which became known as the Koreshan Settlement. The Settlement soon began to decline, however, and by 1908 most of the Koreshans had left Florida. In 1961, the last surviving member of the Koreshan Unity died, and the group’s property was donated to the state of Florida. Today, Koreshan State Park preserves the remains of Koreshtopia and offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of the Koreshans.
