Marco Island History – Old Marco Island

Marco Island is a small barrier island located in southwest Florida. It is situated at the northern end of the Ten Thousand Islands, a chain of islands that stretches along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The island is known for its white sand beaches, golf courses, and luxury resorts. However, before it became a popular tourist destination, Marco Island was the domain of the Calusa Indians and hardy pioneers.

The Calusa were a Native American tribe who inhabited the southwest coast of Florida for thousands of years. They were expert woodworkers and carved canoes, beams, and planks for their houses, docks, and piers. Archeological finds on Marco Island have revealed fine hand-carved works, including masks, animals, and even gods. The most famous discovery is a six-inch wooden panther-like figure, named Key Marco Cat, which is now housed in the Smithsonian Institution.

The Calusa were eventually driven out of their homeland by disease and warfare, and the island was later inhabited by pioneers who attempted to start farms and plantations. However, the tropical climate and frequent hurricanes made it difficult to sustain agriculture on Marco Island. In the late 19th century, the island was finally developed as a resort destination for wealthy vacationers from the northeastern United States. Today, Marco Island is a popular tourist destination for visitors from all over the world.

William Thomas (W.T.) Collier is credited with the founding of Marco Island when he arrived at the north end of the island in 1870, presently Old Marco Village. However, his second son, Captain Bill, would prove to be the hardiest of all pioneers and one of the island’s most famous entrepreneurs. The Barfield family, James and his wife Tommie, would become equally spotlighted in the island history while building their lives in Caxambas, just five miles to the south.

Barron Gift Collier was a successful businessman and entrepreneur who had made his fortune in the advertising industry. In the early 1920s, he set his sights on Southwest Florida, purchasing over one million acres of land in the area. This included ninety percent of the island of Marco Island, which he and his heirs planned to develop into a resort destination. Collier’s vision for Marco Island was realized in the years that followed, as the island became a popular vacation spot for both Americans and international travelers. Today, Marco Island is home to upscale hotels and resorts, as well as a variety of shopping, dining, and recreational options. Thanks to Barron Gift Collier’s vision and investment, Marco Island is now one of the most desirable places to live and visit in Southwest Florida.
