What is Recycling & Why You Should Recycle

Recycling is when certain materials are collected, processed and made reusable. While not all materials can be recycled, most can. Trash & waste generate toxic chemicals and greenhouse gasses from rubbish in landfill sites. Recycling helps the environment by reducing the overall amount of pollution caused by waste, landfills, etc.

How Does Recycling Work

Recycling first depends on people making the choice to do so. When recycling, it’s extremely important to clean every item so it’s spotless. This prevents other materials from becoming contaminated while being transported to recycling facilities. When blue and green recycle dumpsters are full, they are then collected by Waste Connections at a curbside, multi-family dwelling, or depot.

Once materials are delivered to a recycling facility, or material recovery facility (MRF), they are sorted and organized by material types. Sorted materials are then inspected for final quality control clean-up before being baled (compressed) together and staged for sale to end markets.

What items you CAN recycle

The primary recyclable items are glass, aluminum, paper, cardboard and some plastics. Each province has different regulations on what can be recycled. Below is a quick list of the provinces we serve and links to each region for information on recycling regulations.

What residential items CAN’T be recycled via curbside collection

While some provinces accept the recycling of materials such as paint, tires and even oil, in general these materials are not safe to place in recycle dumpsters due to contamination of other materials. For these types of materials, please reach out to the closest recycling facility and ask about their capabilities.

What happens to my recycling?

When recyclable materials are organized, they are shipped off to different markets for processing into new raw materials.

Many of the most common items/materials – plastic bottles and papers – are recycled back to their original state/product. This effectively eliminates the ‘life cycle’ of these products, as they can continue to be recycled and reused. Other more complex materials that are recycled are used in creating totally new products, ranging from furniture to clothes.

Fantastic customer service by the representative at front kiosk who was happy to help us out during our two visits on 11/21, she was awesome!

– Chandlier T.

Yahl was opened in 1997 as a needed service for Dumpsters in Collier County. A few years later our Horticulture Processing Facility was opened to the public. We realized the need for a local C&D recycling facility for recycling instead of filling up our local landfills with waste that can be processed and recycled. After 15 years in permitting, the C&D Processing Facility was opened in 2013. We are open to businesses & residents alike as a cheaper alternative to the County Landfill.

The first step in the process is to get in touch with our staff at sales@yahl.usOpens in a new tab. or simply call us at (239) 352-7888Opens in a new tab..

We schedule a roll-off truck to be delivered to your residential or commercial location. This is a great time to discuss the type of debris and waste you need to dispose of and to make sure the right size of a roll-off container for the job is booked.

yahl dumpster 8

One of our qualified team members will deliver the roll-off container to the designated location on the agreed-upon date. These containers can be positioned in an accessible location on the property. Then, the container is filled with either landscaping waste or construction or demolition waste.

When you are finished, and the project or the container is full, just give us a call. We schedule a pick-up time, and our driver and truck will pick up the container and haul it to our dump and recycling center.

The material on the truck goes through various processes based on its type, but these processes break down the material or create mulch. Rocks and concrete can be broken down into aggregate, which can be used in landscaping.

If you have any questions about the YAHL recycling center, or if you want to book a roll-off container, give us a call todayOpens in a new tab. or contact us through the website formOpens in a new tab..

For All of Your Cleanup and Local Hauling Needs!

Yahl was opened in 1997 as a needed service for Dumpsters in Collier County.

Yahl was opened in 1997 as a needed service for Dumpsters in Collier County. A few years later our Hort Dump was opened to the public. We realized the need for a local C&D dump also, so started the permit process. After 15 years of permitting, our Construction dump was opened in 2013. Residents find us a cheaper alternative to the County Landfill and better for the environment.

Timeline

  • 1997 – Open for business and Roll-Off started with one truck and 10 boxes.
  • 1998 – Open for the horticulture site.
  • 2013 – Opening for C/D murf.

Accepted in Your Bin*Opens in a new tab.

These items can go in your recycling bin, as long as they’re clean and dry.

A group of plastic containers.

Plastic Bottles & Containers

Recycle plastics by shape: bottles, jars, jugs and tubs. The “chasing arrows” symbol doesn’t necessarily mean it’s recyclable.

icon lightbulbClean and dry containers, then put the cap back on before tossing in the bin.

A pile of cans used to store food and beverages.

Food & Beverage Cans

Recycle empty tin, aluminum and steel cans.

icon lightbulbEmpty aerosol cans are also recyclable. If the can has a plastic lid, remove it before recycling.

A stack of folded newspapers.

Paper

Paper, newspaper and magazines are good to recycle.

icon lightbulbIf paper is soiled or wet, compost it.

A stack of folded cardboard.

Flattened Cardboard & Paperboard

Flatten and recycle all cardboard and paperboard.

icon lightbulbCardboard pizza delivery boxes without leftovers or liners should be recycled; but leftover crusts, cheese and other food should not.

RR-table-thm-food-containers (en)

Food & Beverage Containers

Rules for recycling milk cartons, juice boxes and food cartons vary by city, county and state. Check local recycling programs for options to recycle cartons.

icon lightbulbMake sure containers are completely empty to avoid contamination.

RR-table-thm-glass (en)

Glass Bottles & Containers

Glass recycling rules vary, please check your local program guidelines.

icon lightbulbCheck local program guidelines for options to recycle glass. Some communities have curbside pickup or drop-off locations to recycle glass.

Not Accepted in Your Bin

Try to reduce and reuse these items instead of putting them in the trash.

Empty plastic bottles in a plastic bag.

No Bagged Recyclables

Do not bag recyclables. They must be loose in the bin.

icon lightbulbIf you collect your recyclables in a bag, empty them directly into your cart and reuse the bag!

Empty plastic shopping bag.

No Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are not accepted as part of curbside recycling programs – they get tangled in equipment and threaten worker safety.

icon lightbulbDo not bag recyclables as materials inside may not get recycled. Reuse plastic bags, or learn where you can recycle them at plasticfilmrecycling.org.

RR-table-thm-plastic-wrap (en)

No Plastic Wrap & Film

Plastic wrap, bubble wrap, sandwich bags and freezer bags should not go in the recycle bin.

icon lightbulbReuse whenever possible for presents, moving, or storage of similar items, or look for local options to recycle.

Empty product packaging made with non-recyclable flexible plastic.

No Flexible Packaging

Flexible packaging like chip bags and juice or soup pouches cannot be recycled in curbside programs.

icon lightbulbThis type of packaging is made from multiple materials preventing it from being recycled.

Empty cup that has been treated with a wax or plastic coating.

No Cups with Wax or Plastic Coatings

Cups with plastic or waxed coatings are not recyclable. The plastic lids should be trashed as well.

icon lightbulbInvest in and carry a reusable cup instead.

Empty polystyrene container.

No Polystyrene Foam & Plastic

Polystyrene foam, plastic “to-go” containers and cups are made of non-recyclable materials, and are not acceptable in the curbside recycling program.

icon lightbulbPacking peanuts aren’t recyclable either, however some shipping stores will take peanuts back for reuse.

Other Materials

Typically not accepted for curbside pickup. Check local programs for disposal options.

A garden hose.

No Tangling Items

Garden hoses, rope, leashes, wire, holiday lights, string and chains should never go in the recycling bin.

icon lightbulb“Tanglers” can wrap around equipment, endanger MRF workers and shut down entire recycling centers. If they are still in good condition, donate them.

A stack of diapers.

No Dirty Diapers

Dirty diapers’ and pet waste’s yuck factor increase when they end up where they shouldn’t — the recycle bin!

icon lightbulbThese materials will spoil all of the recyclables, turning the load to trash. Trash these instead and keep recyclables clean and dry.

Pile of shoes.

No Household Items

icon lightbulbCheck local programs for reuse and recycling options first. Put them in the trash bin if no other options are available.

Clothing, textiles, shower curtains, mini-pools, fencing and furniture don’t go in the recycling.

Three medical syringes.

No Medical Waste

Medical waste can pose a safety hazard and never goes in curbside recycling or waste bins.

icon lightbulbNeedles are especially dangerous so dispose of them in a safe container like our MedWaste Tracker® box, or contact your local provider.

Overhead photo of a variety of discarded items from a garage.

No Garage Waste

Car parts, scrap metal, tires, filters, propane cylinders and the like are safety hazards if put in curbside recycling or trash bins.

icon lightbulbCheck locally for special collection programs or take them to a local retailer or scrap recycler.

Common Recycling MythsOpens in a new tab.

Grow your recycling IQ by debunking common myths that can help ensure your materials aren’t contaminated and successfully make it all the way through the recycling process and to their next life.

Learn the reality behind the myths to ensure you’re protecting others and the environment by recycling right.

Myth: Most Americans recycle all they can

  • Reality: False.
  • Research shows convenience and commitment are required for maximum recycling. For instance, do you recycle in several rooms of your home? If you only recycle in the kitchen, recyclables in your home office or bathroom get thrown away. So make recycling a collaborative effort where everyone participates, enabling the most recycling of the right materials.

Myth: Recycling arrows on a container mean it is definitely recyclable

  • Reality: Only in some cases. Check the table above and local program guidelines to see what’s recyclable and what’s not.
  • Many plastics cannot be made into new products. Recycle plastics by shape: bottles, jars, jugs and tubs.

Myth: Containers must be squeaky clean in order to be recycled

  • Reality: Containers should be clean, but don’t have to be spotless.
  • While all bottles, cans and containers should be clean, dry and free of most food waste before you place them in your recycling container, they don’t need to be spotless. The goal is to make sure they are clean enough to avoid contaminating other materials, like paper, or your un-lined kitchen recycling bin. Try using a spatula to scrape cans and jars, and putting recyclables in your sink among the dishes you are rinsing to share that same water to rinse and remove residue.

Myth: Even if an item shouldn’t go in the bin, it will get sorted anyway

  • Reality: False. Non-recyclable items are not accepted curbside.
  • Non-recyclable items contaminate recyclables. Recyclables stuck inside plastic bags are at risk for never making it through the recycling process. Conversely, recyclable items placed into garbage containers are hauled to a landfill and cannot be recovered effectively. The right thing to do is put the right recyclables in the recycling container and non-recyclables into garbage containers. Recyclables with the greatest impact are bottles, cans, paper and cardboard.

Myth: Hoses, tanks, shower curtains, swing sets, etc. are recyclable

  • Reality: Just because it’s plastic doesn’t mean it’s recyclable in your recycling program.
  • If it’s not bottles, cans, paper or cardboard, it probably doesn’t belong in your curbside mixed recycling bin and may even require special handling. Just because an item is made from plastic, or contains plastic parts, doesn’t mean recycling facilities can handle it. There are other resources (e.g., Earth911.orgOpens in a new tab.) that can help answer questions about what to do with non-recyclables or household hazardous waste.

Myth: Aerosol cans are acceptable in the recycle bin

  • Reality: The safest way is to take it to the recycling drop off center.
  • Most recycling programs accept empty/dry aerosol cans (without the caps). If the can isn’t empty, it could be dangerous. Some fires are caused in baling machines from trace amounts of can chemicals, and cans with leftover propellant have been known to become projectiles when densified/baled. Waste Management facilities and commodity vendors accept steel, mixed metal and aluminum aerosol packages. Multi-material aerosol packages are not recyclable.

Summary:

Naples has several recycling centers to choose from, depending on what type of materials you want to recycle. Make sure to check the Recycle Guide or call ahead to verify which materials are accepted at each center.

Recycling centers

  • Collier County landfill
  • Naples Recycling Center
  • Waste Connections
  • Yahl Mulching & recycling center
  • Waste Management recycling Naples Transfer Station

Did you know that recycling one ton of paper saves 17 trees, two barrels of oil, and enough energy to power the average home for six months?

Happy recycling!
